A Snowy Owl was being seen in northern Illinois between Shannon and Forreston, Illinois. Kate and I don't usually chase anymore, but this one was being seen so reliably, we decided to give it a shot. Plus I'd never photographed a snowy before. After a couple of hours of road trip, we finally arrived at the destination.
I was expecting to have to drive around until we found it, but instead this guy was sitting right on one of the poles by the side of the road. I found a slightly wide spot to park the van, frantically put on my 500mm lens, and hopped out of the car. I started shooting, walking closer, shooting, walking closer until I was about as close as possible without getting underneath the bird. He scanned the field and every once in a while cast me a look, then went back to checking out the field.
Compared to other shots I've seen of this bird, it's not great. No blue sky, no action. But, frankly, ya just don't get that many chances to take an almost full-frame shot of a Snowy Owl. So I'm OK with it.
